Common File Extension Variations: arc, ARC

Author: System Enhancement Associates (ARC)

Files with the ARC extension are compressed archive files generated from older archiving programs run on the MS-DOS platform. Compression programs use algorithm and code to replace characters in the files making them smaller and store the new compressed data in the ARC format. ARC files may be opened and edited with compatible software. The ARC file format is comparable to the ZIP format but does not allow for directories or folder structure. The ARC format has been replaced by newer compression techniques and is no longer widely supported.
